Bristol—For the first time, the SCAT grant holder selection process was held entirely online.

The previous three rounds of selection were all finalized in a SCAT meeting, where face-to-face discussions always led to unanimous decisions.

In the latest selection round, we have used an online environment to post all the application documents, and hold online discussions. We are using the University of Bristol's Blackboard system, which is an online learning environment. In the context of the SCAT project, we have taken advantage of the features of log-in protected access to document distribution and discussion fora, as an aid for distance collaboration. In this opportunity, all the application documents were posted in Blackboard, and the online discussions permitted once again reaching unanimous decisions on the awards.

This selection round resulted in as many awards as the previous three combined! We have 8 selected grantees: 5 applicants from Chile, 2 from Mexico and 1 from Brazil. The host institutions are JLDA (ex-LMM) and ESPCI in Paris, UPC in Barcelona and Daresbury Lab in the UK. Most of the students are focussing on computational Fluid Dynamics, whilst one concentrates on financial computational methods. The following are the selected grantees:

  1. Victor Romero (University of Chile)
  2. Natalia Rodriguez (University of Chile)
  3. Cesar Gomez (Instituto Nacional de Matematica Pura e Aplicada, Rio)
  4. Guillermo Ovando (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico)
  5. Eduardo Sufan (Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria)
  6. Georgette Pavez (Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria)
  7. Marcelo Abarca (Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria)

All the new SCAT grantees are eager to start their research placements in Europe, and we wish them great success in their project.
